Express vs Standard Services
Express / Direct Services
- Ningbo to Sydney express: 14 days (COSCO Nelson direct) — currently the fastest option on the Australia lane
- Ningbo to Melbourne express: 15 days, mostly transshipping via Singapore
- Ningbo to Brisbane express: 15 days, with limited direct sailings
- Express services cost more but offer stable transit times, with 3–5 days of variance due to weather
Standard / Transshipment Services
- Standard services take 21–22 days, usually transshipping via Singapore or Hong Kong
- Standard services are cheaper (10–20% less), but transit times may vary by 5–7 days
- Suitable for cargo that is not time-sensitive
Direct vs Transshipment
| Aspect | Direct | Transshipment |
|---|---|---|
| Transit time | 14–16 days | 21–25 days |
| Price | Higher | Lower |
| Routing | Origin to destination port non-stop | Via Singapore / Hong Kong |
| Frequency | 2–3 sailings/week | 1–2 sailings/week |
| Example | COSCO Nelson (Sydney direct) | MAERSK (via Singapore) |
Reefer Transit Times and Requirements
Reefer transit times are essentially the same as for dry cargo (14–15 days express, 21–22 days standard), but with additional requirements:
- Book 2 weeks ahead: Reefer slots are limited and tight — book at least two weeks in advance
- Rate premium ~80%: Reefer freight is roughly 80% higher than dry cargo
- Temperature setting: Confirm the required carriage temperature (e.g. −18°C frozen / 0–4°C chilled)
- Power supply: Continuous power throughout the journey, charged separately
- PTI (Pre-Trip Inspection): Inspection certificate confirming the reefer unit is operating correctly
- Priority on arrival: Reefer containers get priority cold-chain handling at the destination port
LCL Transit Times
LCL ocean transit is the same as FCL (14–22 days), but additional time is needed at both ends:
- Cargo consolidation: waiting for the groupage box to fill adds 1–3 days
- Destination devanning: unpacking and sorting adds 1–2 days
- Shared clearance: may add 1–2 days
- Overall, LCL is about 3–5 days slower than FCL
LCL is charged per cubic metre and suits shipments under 20 m³.
Sailing Days and Frequency
There are 3–4 sailings per week from Ningbo to Australia:
- Wednesday departures: COSCO Nelson (Sydney 14-day express), MAERSK, ONE
- Saturday departures: MSC ARIES (Sydney), OOCL (Brisbane 15 days), COSCO
Schedules vary by carrier; Wednesday and Saturday are the main sailing days.

How to Calculate ETA
ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) = sailing date + transit days
Examples:
- COSCO Nelson sailing Wednesday 1 July → ETA 15 July (14 days, Sydney)
- OOCL sailing Saturday 5 July → ETA 20 July (15 days, Brisbane)
- MAERSK standard service sailing 1 July → ETA 22 July (21 days, Melbourne)
Note: ETAs are indicative only; weather and port congestion can shift them by 3–5 days.
Vessel Positioning and Tracking
- Carrier websites — enter the B/L number for real-time status
- MarineTraffic / AIS platforms — live AIS vessel position tracking
- Terminal websites — container status (gate-in / loaded / discharged / picked up)
- Contact our operations team — provide your B/L number and we will check the latest ETA for you
Handling Delays
If a sailing is delayed, we will:
- Proactively notify you of the latest developments (email / WeCom / QQ)
- Help adjust downstream plans: coordinate trucking, reschedule warehousing, notify the consignee
- Human–AI collaboration: AI monitors schedules → anomalies trigger automatic alerts → a dedicated specialist steps in to coordinate
Booking and Container Pickup Timing
- After booking confirmation, empty containers can usually be picked up within 1–2 days
- Exact timing depends on the carrier's equipment release policy and terminal depot congestion
- Closing time is usually 1–2 days before sailing
- SI (shipping instructions) cut-off is usually 2–3 days before sailing
Transit Time Guarantees
- The 14-day express service is relatively stable; 3–5 days of variance is normal
- Standard services are affected by weather and port congestion, with variance of up to 5–7 days
- Holidays (Chinese New Year / Christmas) increase uncertainty
- We always recommend building in buffer time and insuring critical cargo
